HASTINGS.

[raOll OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] June 11. 1900. Should our oivio Councillors desire an afternoon's recreation — not without its spice of exoitemenfc and danger — I would recommend a tour through some of the thoroughfares whioh have been opened up and taken over by the Council, and some whioh have not been taken over, although opened up partially for traffic, Our worthy friend Mr Beecroft might be able to furnish a team which could " do the job," or the genial Tommy handle for the nonce a team of Transvaalers (oxen). The latter for preference should they decide to inolude in the route, a road which has figured on several occasions in i the Counoil proceedings. I refer to • Edgely-road, leading out from St. Aubyn- [ street. On both sides of this ratepayers i have residences and small hcldinga, but because they cannot see their way to '. give to the Council an additional . balf ohain of land, the road as at present i being only half a ohain, they are appari ently doomed to be confined to a state ; which is aptly named as a Slough of Despond. The owner of a portion of the I land has expressed his willingness to give , a certain piece up to get to the road, but i the Council have, and consistently with their laws, refused to deal with the matter > unless the road is widened. But, what - good purpose can be effected by making fc the road in suoh a position a chain wide, j Exceptions have been made in other in--1 Btances, and this is one where the rate- . payers think there is really no need for i the extra width. The matter deserves s further consideration. ' 3 A sale of work on behalf of the funds i for supporting the Melanesian mission ) was held to-day in St. Matthew's Hull, ; when a large number of useful and fancy i articles were disposed of. The decision arrived at by the Borough i Counoil last Thursday, by a majority of 3 one, not to spend any money on demon- . stration purposes, will most probably be resoinded. If there had been a full - .attendance of councillors there is no 1 doubt that some grant would have been 3 arranged for. The objectors had good grounds at that time for refusing to pass any expenditure, the overdraft being up to its utmost limit, but as the Counoil has now reached its worst financial month the a scale should begin to ease on the right t side. Councillor Ellis, one of those who > voted against the proposition, now sug--1 gests that a special meeting should be I called, the object to be duly stated, and • that a vote of 1 per cent on the yearly ' revenue, a sum of £21, should be granted. J This is apparently allowed by law, and would be eminently more satisfactory ■ than " nothing at all." J The Hawke'a Bay Board of Babbit , Trustees will hold their usual monthly 3 meeting on Thursday next, j The children of the district school are 1 to be allowed the use of carbines for drill purposes. Le9t timorous parents should j break out into a storm of protest, let it be a understood that the carbines in questioD • are to be of genuine Noah Ark material f and design, i Eesidents of Queen-street North are ■ seriously thinking of organising a gon--9 dola service for übb during the next 3 heavy rains. Provided some crushed-in ■ culverts can be safely negotiated, no out- ; of-the-way risk to life or limb is anticit pated, the waterway being wide and the quantity of water unlimited. Should a t heavy frost set in gondola tickets may be i exchanged for the " use of skates." i DANEVIRKE. [from our own correspondent.] f June 9, 1900. j The annual meeting of the Waipawa Licensing Committee was held at the , Courthouse yesterday, the Chairman (Mr ) A. Turnbull, f.M.) presiding. There were 5 also present — Uon. W. C. Smith, M.L.C., j Messrs Wright, Whittington, W. Henderson, and A. Mackay. Police reports were \ read, Sergeant Haddrell recommending , several necessary repairs and alterations, , which had since been effected, or were ( being carried out. Publicans' licenses , were renewed for all hotelß in the dißtriot . and the following transfers approved, '. viz. : — W. Daniels to Q-, Faulkner, Wan- . stead Hotel; T. Morgan to B. Geddes, , Makotuku Hotel. Wholesale licenses L were granted to Barraud and Abraham, , Danevirke, and W. Bathbone, Waipawa. . It was resolved to endorse the recom- [ mendation of the Hawke's Bay Licensing Committee with respect to quorum, meeting hour, and granting of conditional licenses. The Huia Ladies' Khaki Contingent . parade at Walker's Hall on Monday even- ' ing, when Mr M'Lennan will give a drill ' instruction. Uniforms have been ordered, 1 and the young lady members — over 30 have been enrolled — are taking a keen interest in the corps, which will certainly be one of the greatest attractions of the peace demonstration. As the day for closing applications for sections in the Ngapaeruru block drawß near, some of our local J's.P. are kept very busy witnessing signatures of applicants. These consist of all classes from the gentle maid and married woman to the stalwart yeoman, who has roughed it and done "bushwhacking" for years. Truly earth hunger exists, and the love for a home and farm of one's own is deeply implanted in the colonial. The various committees in connection with the peace demonstration are hard at work collecting subscriptions, organising sports, fireworks displays, and otherwise arranging for a fitting outburst of popular thanksgiving and joy when the glad newß shall reach us. May it be soon.
