SAMOA.

GERMAN ACTION COMMENTED

UPON.

Eeceivca January 19, 10.35 a.m. Sydney, Thursday. The Rev. George Brown, secretary of the Wesleyan Foreign Missionary Society, considers that the Samoan incident will prove beneficial, and show the world that tripartite control is absolutely uselesß. Either one Power must annes the group or a system of self-government by natives under a protectorate of one of the three Powers must be instituted. Both the morning papers have leaders commenting on the seuious development at Samoa, condemnatory of the action of the Germans, and urging necessary prompt interference on the part of the Powers concerned to permanently settle the trouble.

The opinion is expressed that the German Consul has taken action to bring matters to a head because of the manner l n which German-American interests are clashing in other parts of the world as well as in Samoa. It is thought that American activity has aroused the jealousy of the Germans, who fear that America will .'obtain a predominant interest in Samoa.
