Auckland, Tuesday. At tho office of the Official Assignee today Charles A. W. Bailey made a statement before tho Official Assignee a s to his connection with the yacht Laurel, and winning tho .£IOO prize. Tho statement in the newspapers was that tho bankrupt was tho owner of the yacht. He sailed the yacht without remuneration, and neither directly nor indirectly had ho any monetary interest in the yacht or its winnings. A NARROW ESCAPE. "VVanoanui, Tuesday. A peculiar accident happened to two Maoris while riding some distance from Wanganui. One of them had strapped to the pummel of the saddle 161 bof blasting powder, which exploded from a spark from the rider's pipe or from friction. Both horses were killed, and the riders were considerably burned and shaken. INDECENT ASSAULT. Blenheim, Tuesday. A youth named Hobert Slater, a stranger to Blenheim, was arrested yesterday evening, and was charged this morning at the Police Court with indecently assaulting a young woman on the outskirts of the town. . The police obtained a remand until Thursday. DEOWNED IN A WELL. ; Nelson, Tuesday. An elderly woman named Sarah Clark 1 fell down a well at Spring Grove yesterl day morning, half an hour before she was discovered, and drowned. She had been ailing lately, suffering from attacks of giddiness. An open verdict was returned.
