OLD AGE PENSIONS.
t [by telegraph.] Wellington, Monday. The hearing of old age pensions claims began to-day, At the outset a difficulty was revealed which threatens to injuriously affect a large proportion of the claims. Although the Act enjoins Government servants to help the claimants in every way, the Eegistrar-General does not read this to apply to his department, and refuses certificates without fee. Mr Kenny, S.M., said he had hoped that this department would have been of great assistance, and recommended the "applicants to bring the matter before Ministers. Up to lunch only 16 claims had been heard, and several of these were postponed for evidence as to age or character. In 'nearly every case there was difficulty about proving the age of the applicant. Later. When the Pension Court resumed in the afternoon Mr Kenny, S.M., announced that the difficulty raised by the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages had been removed, and any information required would if possible be furnished.
