THE NEW FRENCH SHIPBUILDING PROGRAMME.
According to the Debats, M. Lockroy has modified the French shipbuilding programme. He now asks Parliament to authorise the laying down of one firstclass battleship, the plans of which are under consideration ; two armored onuseca of 10,014 tons, of the Cond6 type, with a speed of 21 knots ; two cruisers, of a new type, of 4000 tons and 23 knots speed; two destroyers, the plans of which are under consideration; four other destroyers ; 11 first-olass torpedo boats and six sub-marine torpedo boats, of the IJarval class, the first specimen of which is now being built at Cherburg. 'When these vessels are finished, as well as those already under construction, they will form an addition to the navy of 109 fighting ships of all olasses — namely, seven battleships, 21 cruisers, of different types, and the rest torpedo boats, destroyers, and despatch boats. The battleships and cruisers are expected to be ready by 1903. j
