SUICIDE.
A POVERTY BAY SETTLER SHOOTS HIMSELF. [by telegraph.] Gisbornk, Saturday. E. H. Richardson, a settler residing at Makaraka, shot himself with a revolver in the orchard at the back of his residence this afternoon. The bullet entered the mouth, and emerged at the crown of the head. Mr Richardson lingered for some time, but gave no reason for his rash act. < He left a number of letters, of ■which the police hav^a taken possession, and which will probably be produced at the inquest, to be b eld to-morrow. One of these contained directions as TO. where the body would be found. Dece^fed led his family to believe that he was coming into Gißborne, and had his horse in the buggy ready to go ; also a list £>i articles required for the house in his pocket. It is understood from letters left by deceased that family relations ware strained. He was a man of 56 years of age, and an old settler in the district, having arrived here in 1871. He served in the Poverty Bay Mounted Rifles during the war.
