VICTORIA COLLEGE

THE OTHEIJ PROFESSORS APPOINTED. RESULTS OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS. [by telegraph.] Wellington, Thursday. Mr T. H. Easterfiekl, M.A., of Cambridge, has beon appointed Professor of Chemistry and Physics, and Mr 11. M'Kenzie, M.A., of St. Andrew's, Pro. fessor of English Language and Literature. The latter gentleman is a brother of the Minister of Lauds. The professors are all comparatively young, Mr M'Laurin being only 2S. Both lie and Mr Brown are M A.'s. There were some 150 applicants in all, and tho College Council, after spending some days in studying the testimonials and reports of education experts at Home, sat till after midnight before finishing their labors. ' THE SCHOLARSHIPS. The following are the winners of the first six scholarships offered by tho Victoria College, the possible marks being -2000 :— ISertratn Jacobs, Wellington ... IGM Clara Taylor, Stratford 1571 Donald Hall, Wellington 1i304 Thomas Mitchell Stanford, Westland 1501 Henry .Mason, Wellington 1531 Frank Gamble, Wellington ... 1477 Later. Of the 144 candidates for the Victoria College scholarships, only 26 qualified by obtaining half marks in English, arithmetic, and geography, but of the work of these the examiner speaks very highly, • and says they all deserved scholarships, if the college could have afforded it. The prizes are 20 for the city and 40 for the country pupils, for a term of five years, and they have to attend lectures at the college, but are exempt from fees. The examiner says no one could have perused the papers without the conviction being forced on him that tho primary instruction in the schools of the districts whence the candidates came is thoroughly efficient. Geography was the weakest point, and leads him to think it forms no exception to otherwise good teaching. Ho recommends the Boards to look into the matter. The Victoria College Council has rosolved to distribute copies of the report of Mr Gammell, the scholarship examiner, and discuss its recommendations at the next meeting. A complaint was received from West Coast residents at the shortness of the notice given of the scholarship examinations. It was explained that on this occasion it was unavoidable, but that in future due notice would be given. Cables have been sent to the professors selected, and it is intended, if possible, that the work of the College should begin on March 31st. Ib is most probable, however, that it will be nearly a month later before the classes can be begun, and if so notice will bo given in time. Arrangements will be made for a temporary use of the Ministerial residence in Tinakori-road, but some members of tho council have not given up hope of ultimately securing the Mount Cook site. Professor Hugh M'Kenzie, M.A., is a native of Ros3-shire, and is a younger brother of the Hon. John M'Kenzie, Minister of Lands in tho New Zealand Government, He is 36 years of age, and received his early education at the Ardross N school, holding the position of head of the school for three years. His academical career can- be thus briefly summarised : In 1878 he won a bursary of .£lB a year (for three years) at the Grammar School, Aberdeen, thence proceeding to St. Andrew's as winner of the M'Phail bursary. He won a foundation and Gray bursar (.£105) at St. Andrew's inn 1881-2 ; First Bank of Honors and Prizeman in Rhetoric and English Literature in 1881-2 ; same rank in following year ; First Rank of Honors and Prizeman in Logic and Metaphysics in 1883-4 j First Rank of Honors and Prizeman, Theory, History and Practice of Education, 1885-6 ; First Rank of Honors and Prizeman, Advanced Logic and Metaphysics ill 1,1888-9.
