CATTLE IN NEW ZEALAND.

Returns compiled by tbe RegistrarGeneral's Department show that tbo number of cattle (including calves) in New Zealand lost yew was 1,047.901, as against 864,034 In 1895 Included in tbe above were 276,217 dairy cown in 1896, and' 257,140 iv the previous year. The rapid development of the butter and cheese Industry created a requirement for milch cows, wnloh increased in number from 206,906 In 1891 to 276,217 in 1896, or at the rate of 33*50 per cent. The dairy cows were 257.140 in 1895, so that in the single year, 1896, the Increase wan more than 7 per cent on these figures.
