Pirates v. Combined Team,

The above match was played on tbo Recreation Ground on Saturday, and resulted in a win for tbetshamplon team by fcwo goals from tries, 10 points, to a try, 3 points, The team selected for the Pirates all turned up except Blel, bat the Colors were without the services of Macfarlane, Bennett, M'Dponell, Chadwick, Donnelly, and Nolan, The probability of a number nf players nob turning np and a wretched day accounted tor tlie meagre attendance of spectators. The teams were as follows -.—Pirates : Fall-back, Coghlan; three-quarters, Tnbitare, M'Kenzle, and Caldweil ; halve?, W. and J. O'Cnnnell; wings, Downey and Swan : forwards, Mulcoa, Geurdine, Bransfield, Cheer, D. O'Conncll, Gren&ide. and Joo Kyan. Combined toam : Full- back, Irvine; *hree-quarters, Fulton, Liwb, and M'Carthy ; halves, Tatere and F, Jago ; wtnga, S. jAgo and Munroo ; forwards, Kelly, Woodward, Cooper, Slramonds, .Toobey, Ansell, and Birr. The gin? in the first spell waa rather in favor of the Colors, The Pirates, evidently missing Biel in the /rout of the scrams, were unable to work the ball with their usual freedom, and, the beavy ground / and greasy ball mllibatlDg against passing. Dribbling rashes became the order, of which the Colors had rather the best, and the whistle announced half-time with no score. In tho second spell tbe Pirates warmed np to their work, and with a few exceptions had the Colors in trouble tbe whole time. From a scrum on the latter's line tbe Pirates heeled ont, and the ball passed from the twini to M'Kenzie and then to Caldweil, who ran in unopposed. Taking the kick himself, he kicked a fine goal from a moderate angle. Pirates 5. This seemed to wake the Colors np, and the game became faster, and from a fiae straight ran F. Jago almost scored. Caldwall again converted, and the whistle sonnded with tbe Pirates 7 points to the good. For the winners Cogblan was quite safe as fall-back. M'Kenzie and Caldweil played good games at threeqnarter, bat had not so many opportunities as usual. Tuhitare had nob much to do. Tbe O Connells at hulf played Bmartly, getting their side out of difficulties several times, bub Slmmonds greatly hampered their passing tactics. Of the forwards Downey, Malcon, and Cheer wore the best, while Geordlne played all he knew from start to finiab. Swan waa visibly | oat of form, bad as usual scored For the losers Lclwb and Tutere were the beat of the backs, tbeir flue panting relieved more than once. While of the forwards Kolly, Co.nper, Birr and Toobey ware tbe ' pick. Woodward grafted well. Jago and Mnnroe on the wing played fairly well. Simmonda wag supposed to be in the pack, bnt be only stayed there a? long as the ball, with the result that he give the opposing bicks a lot of trouble. He sbould be given a chance as wing forward.
