We frequently hear ot beanty shows and barmaid competitions, and now Hastings has become absorbed in its rival bell(e)s, and to-day has been enabled to decide on their individual merits. At 6 a.m. most of tbe Inhabitants were awakened by the somewhat dirge-like tones of the latest arrival, and so vigoroas was the ringing, practically continued until 8 a.m., that farther repose was pat entirely out of question. Wo have been favored with several doleful repetitions through* oat tbe d>»y. This evening tbe clanging oi the bell, which after all most nearly reached the heart of the public, arose ; no doubt jealously wrathful, for it was od extremely s'ighb provocation, not a heart, bat a chimney on fire. There is unfortunately considerable similarity of tone feetwnnn the two, and id is to be hoped for the comfort of all concerned that the nse oi tho K.C. ball will be made' with judgment, as one cna have too much of even a good thing. Of course we are not used to it yet, and no doubt a special ringing haß been indulged in to-day. Mr Allan Vlckets met with a rather nasty accident to-day, being thrown off bis horse opposite to tbe Borough Council Chambers. He was picked up and carried into Mr J. Cnllen's, where he lay for some some considerable time before being taken to bis own home. *

Messrs P. A. Herman and Co.'s tern* porary premises have been crowded throughout the day with visitors inspecting the oholce works of Japanese art which he will dispose of by auction tomorrow (Friday).
