Dr. Springthorpe gave ■evidence to the effect that 'Williams made a statement to bim alleging that his dead "pother appeared regularly to him since ne was 10 years of age, and while he was in Bydneyshe Incited him to kill bis wife. The doctor stated tbat the accused had con» trscted syphilis, and had stated in the presence of a Crown witness tbat he would kill any woman who was suffering from the disease ; that he followed one woman Into four different places with the Abject of killing her, bnt he did not get an opportunity to commit the act ; and that while in London Williams suffered severely from tho disease. The Judge said he failed to see why the doctors could not give a decided opinion as to the sanity or otherwise of the prisoner at tbe present stage, nnd declined to grant a postponment of the trial.
