The House re-aasembled at 2.30 p.m. QUESTIONS POSTPONED. Major Atkinson moved that "the questions on the order paper be postponed till next day.— Agreed to. CLOSE OF THE, SESSION. ' Replying, to Mr Steward, Major Atkinson said he saw no reason why the business of the session should not be concluded by Wednesday evening. ' ' THE LAND BILL. , Mr Richardson brought up the report of the conference oh the' Land Bill, the effect of which was that a compromise had been arranged with the Legislative Council by which the present Land, Boards 'would "be - retained nntjl the next session of Parliament at a reduced rate of pay to be determined upon by the Honse. The report was adopted. BILLS. Mr Hislop moved the second reading of ■ the Building Societies Act, 1880, Amendment Bill, the purpose of which, he said, was to confer upon building societies the powers exercisable~by an ordinary mortgagee. The bill was. to have a retrospective character. — Agreed^to. Mr Fergus, moved the second reading of the Taniaki West Licensing District Bill, to. validate certain proceedings under the Licensing Act, 1881. —Agreed to. MrHislopmov'ed the second reading of the Sounds County Hospital Representation Bill:— Agreed to. Mr Mitchelson moved the sesond reading of the Public Work 9 Acts Amendment Bill.— Agreed to. Mr Hislop moved the second reading of the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill (No. 2).— Agreed to. The Crown and Native Lands Rating Act Repeal Bill was discharged from, the order paper. ''„-, Major Atkinson moved' the second reading of the' West Coast Settlement • Reserves, Act Amendment BUI, dealing with leases oil the West Coast, and proposing to grant hew leases on surrender.— Mr Taipua opposed ; the bill at some length.— Mr Carroll.suggested that it be postponed . till next session,' and "deprecated hasty legislation of this' kind. Major 'Atkinson said the bill was not hasty legislation.,,. lt was .only brought in to fulfil engagements , with certain persons which were entered into in 1881, and was merely an act of justice to the people on the West Coast.— Agreed to. Major Atkinson moved the second reading of the South Island Native Reserves Bill, which he said provided for the management of native reserves in the South Island.— Mr Pratt said it would not be_ necessary to offer .any factious opposition to this bill, as certain amendments suggested to the Premier had been accepted.— Agreed to. . ■ Major Atkinson moved the second reading of the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Bill, the object of which, he said, was to reduce the subsidies, ' as provided in the Financial Statement.— Agreed to. Major Atkinson moved the second reading of the Naval and Military Settlers and Volunteers ' Land Bill. — Agreed to after some discussion. Mr Mitchelson moved that the amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Government Railways Bill be agreed to. He said that the amendments were unimportant. — Agreed to. The Building Societies Act Amendment Bill, the Tamaki West Licensing District Bill, the Sounds County Hospital Representation Bill, and the Public Reserves Sales Bill were committed; <read a third time, and passed. The House went into committee on the Public Works Act Amendment Bill, and progress was reported to enable members to consider clause 4. The House rose at 5.30.
