WOODVILLE.

(from our own correspondent.) \ 1 April 21st, 1885. ' The sale of Government lands in the ] Maharahara block brought a great number of people into the township on Thursday last, and the sections, for which there was more than one applicant, realised very high prices. One section fetched £5 per acre, but there is little \ doubt that the prices paid are in some | cases ridiculous, and that the purchasers will be many years before they will see their money back. It will require from £6 to £1 per acre to bring the land into a fair state of improvement, which will i bring its costs up to about £12 per acre before any return can be obtained. This, for land 9 or 10 miles from the township, and lying back, is to say tho least a big price. The various special settlement associations are to get their land at £1 per acre, and with survey will cost the selector about JEI 23 Gd per acre. The election of the Licensing Commissioners for the town district of Woodville will take place on the 9th of May, and the nomination of candidates on the 28th of April. The local option poll also takes ' place upon the 9fch of May. A very serious accident occured to Mr C. Kayser, of Woodville, last week, while he was engaged felling a tree. With him were his brother and Mr J. Bellshaw. When the tree was about falling a limb that had apparently been hanging in an adjoining tree, becoming dislodged, fell, and struck Mr Kayser on the back and on the back of the head. He was rendered unconscious, and remained in that Btate for a long time. The unfortunate man has apparently been improving, but there is considerable danger anticipated from the symptoms. I hope soon, however, to be able to report his complete recovery. Building is going on apace. Vogelstreet is rapidly filling up, and some very good buildings are being erected. The Club Hotel is being extended considerably on the M'Lean-street frontage. We have been getting some exceptionally fine weather, but on Sunday we had considerable rain, and rather a heavy storm of thunder and lightning. The weather has, however, again brightened up.
