SALVATION AND LARRIKINISM.
Sir,— Evidence that the larrikin element is predominant in Napier was strongly illustrated lnst Monday night, when a mob of hoodlums exhibited their blackguardly powers to an unlimited extent by their disgraceful conduct in connection with the 80-callod Salvation Army. The riffraffs, not contented with their hooting and unearthly yells, actually reverted to throwing missiles on the roof of tho captain's private residence in Cnrlyle-street, and, the oaptain on remonstrating with the crowd was greeted with blasphemous epithets and an extra shower of pebbles for his trouble in defending his rights. Surely the polieo onght to Btep in and prevent such a repetition from occurring ' again ; if they will not do so, they should j prevent peaceful residents from being dis- \ turbed by riissiureeable bowlings at nights by the gang of larrikins that Napier unfortunately possesses. Although Carlylestreet is a busy and thickly populated ! part of the town it is entirely excluded from the eyes of the law. If the authori- j ties had used tho discretion that is necea- j sary for the welfare of a street, such an exhibition as ihat of last Monday night could have been averted. — lam, &c, Carlylk-street. Napier, April 22, 1885.
