DUNEDIN BIRTHDAY MEETING.

[by telegraph.] Dunedin", Wednesday. The Dunedin Jockey Club's Queen's Birthday meeting was well attended, and fine weather favored the meeting. The principal race of the day was the Birthday Handicap, which resulted in a grand race between Sir Modred and the Envy filly, the former's victory being very popular. Three totalisators did a good business. The police did not interfere with sweeps. The results were : — HANDICAP HUBDLB BAOE, Of 60 soys, second horse to receive 10 soys ; one mile and a half. Mr W. H. Taggart's b g Robin Hood, aged, 9st 101 b (Owner) 1 Mr J. Allen's b g Little John, aged, list (Allen) 2 Mr C. Hobb's Mokarakara, 5 yrs, lOst slb (Owner) 3 —Haricot, lOst 101 b, and Wild Boy, lOst 71b, also ran. Cloud fell at one of the hurdles and was killed, his jockey escaping unhurt. Robin Hood won with some ease. maiden plate, Of 40 soys ; one mile and a quarter. Hon. G. M'Lean's b f Legerdemain, 3 yrs, Bst 51b (M. Allen) 1 Mr P. Butler's b fTe Ata, 2 yrs, 6st lllb 2 Mr G. Cutts' b f Amora, 3 yrs, Bst 31b 3 — Clinkernia and Spray also ran. Legerdemain was a strong favorite, and won easily. BIETHDAT HANDICAP, Of 100 soys, the second horse to receive 20 soys ; one mile and a half. Mr H. Goodman's b h Sir Modred, 4 yrs, Bst 121 b (Rudings) 1 Hon. W. Robinson's Envy filly, 3 yrs, 6st 101 b (F. Smith) 2 Mr G. Bates' eh g Poet, 4 yrs, 6st 81b 3 — Adamant 6st 13lb, and Legerdemain 6st 51b, also started. This was an excellent raco between the two first horses. Half a mile from home Sir Modred began to overhaul the filly, who had been leading for some time, and he gradually closed on her until within 300 yards of home, when he passed her and led all the way to the po_t. The two had a grand contest, Sir Modred winI ing by about a neck amid loud cheers. Time, 2n_in 55secs. Luna had accepted for the race, and not being officially j scratched the owner was fined £5. Mr Nicholl's Randall, 3yrs, 65seos. 1 , There were twenty starters, of whom | Mr Vezey's Tiger, with 55 sees., was the favorite. Bandall, however, kept his lead to the finish. In one of the totalisators there were only 8 investors on him out of 244. Time, 4mins. 19secs.
