THE TARANAKI NATIVE DIFFICULTY.

Eleven prisoners who were talceff*4o New Plymouth by the Constabulary last Saturday were yesterday charged at the Police Court with malicious injury to property belonging to Mr William Eowe, and with conduct calculated to cause a breach of the peace. After evidence had been taken the prisoners were convicted and sentenced to two months' imprisonment in Dunedin gaol, and were ordered to be bound over to keep the peace for 12 months each in £100 himself, with two sureties in £300 each. .

A pxxblic meeting was held at "Waitara yesterday afternoon to . take into consideration the action of the member for Grey and Bell (Mr Carrington), in supporting the Government after having heard the statements of. Messrs Thomson and Gisborne respecting the Waimate Plains difficulty. Mr T. Bayley was called to the chair, when resolutions were passed to the effect that the conduct of the member for Grey and Bell in habitually neglecting his constituents on his return from Parliament, and prior to his leaving New Plymouth,, was unparliamentary and evincive of a wilful disregard to the wishes of the electors of the district for which he was elected, and taking into consideration the critical position of native affairs iv the Taranaki district it was of the utmost importance that members of the Housed of Eepresentatives should take united action in native matters, and should record their votes jointly against the present Government, the members of which have as yet failed to recognise the gravity of the position. The following resolution was also passed : — " That this meeting is of opinion that Mr Cunningham does not possess the confidence of the electors of the Grey and Bell district, and that he be requested to resign at once, and not in any case vote fofJUab present Government." The meeting was a, large one, and well represented the district of Grey and Bell.
