The Union Co.'s . s.s. Wanaka, Captain M'GHllivray, arrived from Gisborne at 6 a.m., and was tendered by the Bella, and mails and passengers landed. The sea increased so fapidly in the Bay that by 10 o'clock further communication was impossible. The steamer, finding it iinsafe to remain afc anchor, got un'derw'eigh, and steamed round under easy steam, waiting for orders front the agent, who had telegraphed to head-quarters for instructions. The instructions were to proceed to Wellington, for which port she left at 11.30 a.m. Mr Watts informs us that the Wanaka goes no further South than Wellington this trip, returning to this port on Tuesday next. Owing to oui* reporter being carried.on, we are unable to give a report of the Waiiaka's passage from the north. The Union s.s. Co., fearing they will not be able to" laud the cargo per Tararua, have telegraphed to have it landed at Wellington, where it will be transhipped to the Wanaka, arriving here on Tuesday. The Tararua arrived at Wellington, from South, at 11 a.m., and- sailed for this port at 6 p.m. on the 20th. • The s.s. Clyde, Captain Petcrsen, was unable to get away for Wairoa, on account of the heary sea. J •« „ »' ■ The Mary Wadley, Captain Balle, tor Newcastle, will not 'be able to sail until the Bea has moderated. . ,The schooner Alert, Captain Hays, has cleared for Lyttelton with wool and tallow, to "be" transhipped at that port to the Waimate, for London. < The s.s. Southern Cross left; Gisbovne for this port at 1 p.m. yesterday. It is thought probable that she may be brought inside this morning by steering her in by the semaphore. She is notified to sail for Wellington and Lyttelton at 2 p.m. to-day.
