[By Cable.] [itEUTEII'S TELEGHAMS.I CALCUTTA, March 30. Genoral Sandiman's camp at Baghkana was attacked by 2000 of the enemy, who were completely defeated, with a loss of 145 men. Our loss was small. [By Special Wihe.l AUCKLAND, March 31. For the month of March the Customs receipts at Auckland amounted to £20,485 2s lid, and for the quarter ending to -day they amount to £62,835 16s against £64,215 19s 4d in the March quarter of 1878. This shows a deficiency of £1380 3s 4d, but considering the reduction of Customs duties it is regarded by mercah- , tile men as a very substantial increase. During the quarter a very large quantity of sugar has gone into consumption. Mr and Mrs Clements leave here for Great Britain by the mail steamer Australia.
The last meeting of the Bay of Islands and Mongonui'Elecfcoral Eoll Commission was held to-day in the Civil Commissioner's office hei'e, when Mr Lawlor, late Eovising Officer for that district, was examined at some length. A correspondent writing from Whangaroa states that the general opinion there is that the action of Mr E. M. Williams, in objecting to the Maori claimants to vote, would be sustained. Mr Bryce is expected to leave here for South on Wednesday. The steamer Nana Sahib and a punt were dispatched to Waihou Eiver this morning, to commence tho work of snagging on behalf of the Thames County Coxmcil.
Mr P. Nolan, a pioneer of the Thames, is appointed inspector of railway works. A public meeting was hold at Warkwortli to-day, respecting the North Auckland railway. Mr Palmer was in the chair. A resolution was unanimously passed adopting the Whangarei petition in favor of tho extension of the railway to Margonui. A railway com-
