SECOND DAY.

President— Robert Farmor, Esq. Judge— Thomas Tanner, Esq. Stewards— J. N. Williams, W. J. Birch, R. Farmer, W. U. Burke, Thomas Tanner, Jaß. Lyon, W. shrimpton, and C. B. Winter, Esqrs. Starter— C. A, Fitzroy, Esq. Olerk of the Course— A. Danvere, Esq. .Secretary— F. D. Luckie, Esq. The races were, concluded yesterday. The rain that feti.without intermission the previous night induced fears that the meeting would have to be postponed, but it cleared off in the morning, and a more enjoyable day for racing could not hate been de- | sired. There were not quite so many i visitors as on the opening day, but nevertheless before the races commenced a large number had assembled. The conrse was in capital order, and the races fair, i but the fields were not so large nor the finishes so exciting as on Thursday. The club must be congratulated on the success which has attended their efforts in securing a suitable course, which, when the improvements they propose making are carried out, will be one of the finest, if not the finest, racecourse in the North Island. The arrangements, as on the previous day, were first rate, and everything passed off most satisfactorily. The first race was fixed for 1 p.m., but was, as oh the first day, postponed to allow visitors by the half-past 12 o'clock train to arrive in time for it. Soon after the appointed time seven runners were telegraphed for the Handicap Hurdle Race, and they made Grey Mourns the favorite, but he did not justify the confidence resposed in him, as he never took any part in the race. Loch Lomond and Wairarapa ■were scratched; Tamatia first, Wanganui, who ran very well, being second and Express third. For the Hawke's Bay Plate Vallance's Pinfire and Merlin were the only acceptors , and went to the post, but Pinfire returned to tbe paddock, and Merlin cantered round the course by himself, much to the disgust of the spectators. For the next race, The Provincial Produce Stakes, six ran, Hero and Hailstorm from the same stable being first and third, Camelia second. The Tradesman's Handicap was the next event on the card. There were seven starters. Sinking Fund and Pinfire were scratched, and Lara was selected by the knowing ones as being the pick of the basket, but the pot boiled over, Lalla Rookh, against whom 10 to 1 was offered, winniug rather easily from Lara, -Joe Leonard third. The next race was the Selling Race of £30 ; three started. West End was the winner, with Ika second and Ben Nevis third. The Consolation, for whioh seven ran, wound up the meeting.
