THIS Book teaches how to preserve Health and prevent Disease. It teaches sickly people how to become Strong. It teaches how and Avhat to Eat, to Drink, and to Avoid ; hoAv to live and to become healthy, happy, and to live and enjoy a long Life. It treats on Digestion, Food, and Drink, Clothing, and Bathing; the treatment of Common Ailments and in Cases of Emergency, and where no other help is at hand. A LIFE MAY THUS BE SAVED. OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. Extract from the Auckland Evening Star, November 30, 1878. We havo received a copy of " Tho Settlor's Guide," Avrittcn by Mr J. C. Sharland, of this , city, devoted to tho discussion of the laws of health, and lioav to preserve it. No knowledge can be so incessantly appealedo t by the incidents of every day as tho knoAvledgc of tlie processes by Avhich man lives and acts ; and no scientific subject can be so important to him as that of his own life. At every moment, he is in danger of disobeying huvs, ■which when disobeyed, may bring years of suffering, decline of poAvor, and premature decay. Sanitary reformers preach in vain, because they preach to a public which docs not understand the laws of life. Even the sad experiences of others yields us no lesson unless tho principles involved are understood. If ono man suffers from impure air, another may endure it without apparent harm. A tliird concludes that it is all chance, and trusts to that chance. Had ho understood the principles involved, he Avould not have been left to chance ; his first lesson in swimming would not have been a shipwreck. The writer justly observes : — " That it is incumbent upon every man to haA'e an intelligent knoAvledgc of the wonderful structure of huvs for the preservation of health, and of the remedies which, science has discovered for the relief of disease and suffering. Mr Sharland shoAvs that a clear and accurate conception of ) the cliicf physiological laAvs, sufficient for ordinary practical guidance, may be impressed upon the mind and illustrated by memorable facts, Avithout once appealing to anatomical knowledge. It seems to havo boon his object to expound principles rather than to teach a science. He lias endeavored to be intelligible and interesting to all. The chapters embracing the subjects of the physiology and chemistry of common life arc excellent. The vieAvs set forth on air, food, ventilation, baths, batliing, clothing, &c, also deserve careful attention. Mr Sharland has taken great pains and bestoAved considerable labor on the Avork. It is published at a loav price, and Avill be found a most usefid text-book in tho household, both in toAvn and country. We refer the public to tlie advertisement of its publication, in our third page, for further particulars. Iv our advertising columns will be found the notice of an excellent little work called "The Settlers' Guide," emanating from the pen of Mr J. C. Sharland, of Auckland, Avhich is Avell worth the attention of our toAvn and country readers. It treats briefly all matters of health and disease, and gives, in a compendious form, an account of the diseases to which the human framo is liable, and the means of counteracting or alleviating them. When tlie doctor is at hand such a work may still bo useful, for its information and for ula> for food suitable for the sick, and for its practical remarks on hygiene, and various other subjects connected Avith the household. We must accord the meed of praise to Mr Sharland for having arranged his subjects with great method, and in a style concise and comprehensible to everyone. We Avislr him every success, not only in the sale of his book, but for his spirit and enterprise in preparing medical remedies, all of Avhich bear the highest reputation for cfiieaoy, genuineness, and moderate price. Price : Is. 6d. Sold by DINWIDDIE, MORRISON & CO., Booksellers and Stationers, Tennyson-street, Napier. 890
