HAWKE'S BAY EDUCATION BOARD.

Thursday, April 4. The Board met at 11 a.m. Present — The Chairman (J. Rhodes, Esq.), Messrs Lee, Newton, and Chambers. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The board proceeded to determine upon the election of the new Education Board, a work which occupied more than an hour and a half. Some delay was occasioned by several of the committees having omitted to indicate outside their communications that they had reference to the election, thus necessitating the opening of the whole of the correspondence, of which there was a great deal. In two cases — Ormondville and Ormond — the voting papers of the members of the committes were forwarded to the board, instead of the result. The board had in consequence to do in each case what those committees should have done. In the case of Ormond there was no difficulty experienced, as six of the committee had voted for Kenrick and Williams (Archdeacon), and the other committeeman plumped for the Archdeacon. At Ormondville the

committee had distributed their votes pretty broadly, and ib was found, that while eight names had majorities over the others, there waß a tie for ninth place^ between Miss Herbert, Mr Harding and&Mr Orr. The board therefore balloted to decide the matter, the result being in favor of Miss Herbert. There were no returns from Mohaka or Danevirk. The following was found to be the « result of the voting of the committtees : — Mr Ormond, 21 ; Mr Lee, 18 ; Mr ,J. N. Williams, 18 ; Mr Sutton, 17 ; Rev. D. Sidey, 10 ; Captain Russell, 15 ; Mr Harding, 13; Mr Kenrick, 11; Miss Herbert, 10 ; Lieut. -Colonel Lambert, 10 ; Archdeacon Williams, 10 ; Rev. R. Fraser, 9 ; Rev. D'Arcy Irvine, 9 ; Mr Miller, 9 ; Mr Bridge, 8 ; Mr Orr, 8 ; Rev. H. W. St. Hill, 6 ; and Mr Rearden, 2. Miss Herbert having again tied for ninth place, this time with Archdeacon Williams and Lieut. -Colonel Lambert, the board balloted, with the result that there was one vote (Mr Newton having left the Chamber) for each candidate. The Chairman thereupon gave his casting vote for Miss Herbert. . The new Education Board therefore' consists of Messrs. Ormond, Lee, J. N. Williams, Sutton, Sidey, Russell, Harding, Kenrick, and Miss Herbert. The secretary was directed to write to Mr Colenso, requesting him to continue to discharge the duties of inspector until the 30th instant. The board then adjourned.
