Mrs Warren pleaded guilty on the charge of stealing goods and money from Mrs Lorrie, but not guilty on the charge of arson. The evidence is concluded, and the jury has retired. H.M.S. Wolverine takes the Governor North this week. The Hero for Sydney took several passengers for New Guinea. Sir George Grey is in bad health at the Kawau. A fire occurred in Fort-street, but was quickly extinguished by the promptitude of the Woverine "Blue Jackets." Mr Sheehan has received a telegram from Alexandra, reporting that Tawhiao is seriously ill. He had sent a special messenger to Alexandra for medicine. There is an unexpected hitch in the Broomhall negotiations which will probably upset them. The Attorney-General advises the Government that by the 29th clause of the Waste Lands Act, all negotiations are invalid. It is contended that, though power is given to the Governor to sell the lands of the colony by private contract, those lands under negotiation were never the property of the Crown, the native title not being extinguished. The Government have the matter under consideration. The Governor, Comfaodore Hoskins, and Colonel Whitmore will visit the training shipatKohimaramara to-morrow. The Governor proceeds to the East Coast on Monday. Mrs Warren 'was found not guilty of arson, but was sentenced to six months' imprisonment on the charge of larceny in stealing Mrs Lome's clothing. Russell, whose clothes were found on the shore of the harbor, was arrested today on three charges of embezzlement. He has been living on Hay's farm. ASHBURTON, April 4. Mr Wason, the member for Coleridge, addressed his constituents here last Dight. He condemned Mr Larnach's conduct, and blamed Major Atkinson for not resigning on Mr Ballance's Native Lands Court Bill resolutions, and for taking the part he had in trying to oust Sir George Grey after the latter was in power, but said that the Major's motives were pure, and that he desired personally to withdraw from office. He thought Sir George, Grey should have had, and should still have, a fair trial. He would oppose Sir Gerge Grey's measures with moderation, but not with bitterness. He opposed manhood suffrage. He received a vote of thanks. CHUISTCHURCH, April 4. Mr Clarke, C.E., disapproves of ail the twenty-five schemes sent in for the water supply of the city. He recommends that the premium be withheld, and that the £100 be distributed equally among the authors of the various schemes. The directors of the Union Insurance Company purpose closing the books at the end of next month, for the first halfyearly balance. A heavy north-west gale yesterday prevented Cooper and Bailey's circus from giving a performance.. The large tent was seriously damaged. Mr J. C. The rateable property for the city for the last year is £141,890. The contest for the seat at Port Chalmers, vacated by the Hon. Mr Reynolds, is likely to be keen. Mr Joyce declines standing. Mr H. Dench, ex-Mayor, has consented, and his supporters are enthusiastic as to his return. HOKITIKA, April 4. The evidence in Ryan's case will be concluded to-night. The census returns show the population of Taranaki County to be 7375, having neai'ly doubled itself in four years ; town of New Plymouth, 2680, being an increase of 640 in four years. The Grey and Bell district four years ago had 1808 souls in it. The census returns now show 3807. There are 1559 houses in the county, showing an increase of 515. In New Plymouth there are 599 houses, showing an increase of 105. ; TAUPO, April 4. Messrs Watt Bros.' steamer Victoria foundered at her moorings in the river. Endeavors were made to-day to raise her by Messrs Noble and Walker, but were unsuccessful.
