The s.s. Star of the South, from Auckland, arrived in port at 6 a.m. on Saturday. She loft Auckland at S p.m. on Wednesday, the 23rd, rounded East Cape at 4 a.m. on Friday, and arrived at Portland Island at S p.m. the same day. She endeavored to land her cargo, consisting of a few tons, but had to relinquish the attempt, there being too much sea running to admit of her doing so ; she therefore left at 10 p.m., and arrived here as above. Captain Smith reports the Wairoa bar to be still in an unpromising state ; the Manaia grounded twice in crossing it. The barquentine Falcon arrived in this port from Newcastle. N.S.W,, at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. She left that port on Tuesday, the loth, thus making the passage in 12 days. From the time she left Newcastle until her arrival in Cook Straits the winds were light and variable, working round all the points of the compass. On Thursday, the 24th, she experienced strong winds from the W.N.W. She made Cook Straits on Friday, the 25th. On Saturday she encountered a heavy westerly gale. Throughout the passage Captain Hair repoi-ts a great prevalence of lightning. We learn with regret that on her last trip from this port to Newcastle, Mr Vaughan, who was on board as a jiassenger, died. The schooner Albatross left Whangapoua on Tuesday, the 22nd, at 6 p.m. She had light winds from the S.W. in crossing the Bay of Plenty. She made East Cape on Wednesday at midnight, the wind then blowing in light gusts from the N. W. She was off Portland Island at 6 a. m. on Thursday, and arrived here at 5 p.m. She remained outside until yesterday at 3 p.m., when she came inside and made fast alongside the schooner Kenilworth at the breastwork. She has a cargo of 60,000 ft. of timber, consigned to Mr B. Johnson. The schooner Acadia left Mercury Bay on Sunday, the 20th, with strong N.W. "winds and heavy sea, which moderated on Monday evening, she then being off Cape Runaway. From this time until she made Portland Island on Tuesday night the winds were light and variable. She arrived here at an early hour on Thursday morning, and came inside on Saturday afternoon. She has 45,000 feet of timber for Mr Le Quesne. The schooner Minnie Hare was towed out by the steam-launch Bella on Saturday afternoon.
