WAIROA.

(FROM OVU Off« CORRESPONDENT.) Clyde, December 16, 1870. I was a little premature last week, in describing Kuarr and Rewi as having returned to an abiding place at Whakaki ; their stay there being limited to the return of the Hero, when they and some others will at once proceed to Napier. A doubt exists, lately, here as to the authenticity of the letter from Waikare, purporting to be from Te Kooti. It appears that a native (contemporary of Kooti in former whaling days), named Hirine te Oi Kau, has been in the habit of counterfeiting the handwriting of several Hau Hau leaders ; formerly that of Anaru Matete, and latterly that of, in the present instance, Te Kooti. This worthy, so the Hau Hau bearer of the epistle says, is presently at Tiki" Tiki, on the Lake, from which place he forwarded the letter, it (by my informant) being now in the hands of the authorities, and of which I forwarded you a brief notice at the beginning of the week]} Major Withers arrived on Tuesday last, and, on Wednesday, the competition-firing took place, with no particular result. One of our bridges, just above Captain Deigbton's residence, has partially given way, and presents an irregular opening, about 2 feet long by 7 or 8 inches broad, justin the centre. I would caution strangers arriving at Clyde from the South, after nightfall, to be cautious on approaching the bridges. No news of importance.
