[via patea.] December 8. Me. Gisbobkb addressed a large audience, last evening, in the Institute. He was enthusiastically received, and will not be opposed for the Egmout district. He returns to Wellington this morning, overland, via Patea. Yesterday, a deputation of flax mill proprietors waited on Mr. Gisbqrne to know why Colonel Haultain and others had been appointed on the flax commission in preference to such men as Mricfarlane, Hall, Kelly, and others. Mr. Gisborne replied that members of the House of Representatives could not be appointed, and that Col. Haultain would be travelling commissioner.
