Divine Service. — The Rev. Robert Taylor has requested us to announce that he will preach at Porangahau on Sunday, May 29, at 11 a.m. The «4 ueen ' s Birthday falls on Tuesday next, and would appear to have been selected as a day of unusual festivity. What between racing at Havelock, rifle firing in town, sports at other places, and a performance of the Garrick Club in the evening, there seems no lack of amusement. The entertainment to be given by the Garrick Club offers a good many attractions ; among others a musical interlude, in which some well known amateurs will take a part. Suicide by a Native at Tarawera. — A singular case of suicide by a native named Hori te ftori occurred at Tarawera on the 14th inst, and was referred to in our last. The particulars of the inquest have been supplied to our contemporary from whom we quote : — lt appears that the deceased, who was suffering from low fever, had been recently discharged from the Armed Constabulary, a fact which seems to have preyed upon his mind, as he was noticed to be, gloomy, and to wander in bis conversation. On the day in question, after taking some suitable medicine, he laid down in a tent, where he was seen by a man named Harry Dolman, who also entered and laid down. The native took a loaded revolver from its case, which was lying in the tenfe, saying, "lam going to blow my brains out." Dol- i man, thinking he was joking, replied, "You ! have no brains." Hori then pointed the revolver to his breast^ and saying, "Good bye, Harry," fired, the shot proving almost immediately fatal. On the 16th instant a jury was summoned, and an inquest held before Dr. J. M. Gibbes. The facts above described were testified to by several witnesses. Resident Magistrate's Court. — Very few cases have been brought before the Court since the commencement of the Circuit Sittings of the Supreme Court. On Monday, the 9th, John Brunskili was convicted of stealing two pieces of board of the value of Is., from tie premises of Joseph ' LeQuesne, at the Spit, and, the case having been heard, the Resilent Magistrate said it was necessary that tn example should be made in Buch cases, vhich were now very prevalent ; the sentence of the Court was that the offender be imprisoned for three months with hard hbor. On the 11th, John Boyle was broujht up on a charge of stealing the sum of £13 from the person of John Hudson. The prosecutor not appearing when called, the prisoner was discharged. With the exception of one or two civil in which judgment was given by defaulvthere has been n) other business before the Court since the appointment of Mr. Anderson, who ias been appointed R.M., pending the de'cjsioh of the Government regarding Captaii Curling's case.
