LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

The Editor does not hold himself responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents. Sib, — Mr. Ferard having thought it expedient to publish his reasons for declining to act aa a Trustee to the Hawkes' j Bay Provident Building Society, necessitates my troubling you with a reply. The gist of Mr. Ferard's complaint is that he J was nominated against his will, and that his name appeared in print without his sanction. Now, lam quite willing to admit that his first grievance lies at my door. I waited upon him, as being one of our representatives, and as having leisure at his command, and requested he would favor the P. S. by becoming a Trustee. I truly intended it as a compliment due to his position amongst us, the society being for the public benefit, and established upon the latest and most approved principles now in vogue in the mother country. I presumed, as the trouble would be little, the expense nil, and the honor by and by considerable, that my application would commend itself to his favor, notwithstanding his present objections and hesitation. I therefore requested my friend Mr. Fisher to send him a prospectus, and inform him I had nominated him, and desiring an early reply. No answer arriving was construed into assent. I append Mr. Fisher's statement, which -will shew that the lapse of sixteen days led to the grievance of which Mr. Ferard complains. It appears that I reckoned without my host in conceiving that Mr. Ferard would lend himself so readily to aid a public good. I forgot to take into consideration his nice scrupulosity, for which I humbly beg his pardon ; and whatever portion of the success of the H. B. P. B. S. is owing to the surreptitious loan of Mr. Ferard's name (as I ween the hon. gentleman implies in his letter), prompt steps have been taken to redress the wrong — vide the Secretary's statement appended. Trusting Mr. Ferard will perceive that my only motive was civility to himself and the advancement of an estimable society, I remain, sir, obediently yours. Gc. WoBGAN. Napier, 24th Feb., 1870.
