An important series of announcements appeared in a New Zealand Gazette dated the 14th inst., comprising an Order in Council giviug effect to the " Grovernmeut Annuities Acfc 1869," and regulations respecting tho life iu--'su'rances aud annuities, as therein provided for. Proposals for immediate or deferred annuities, or for life insurances, will be received afc any of the Money Order •offices from or ou behalf of any person over fcho a^e of 16, and under that of (60. Payments of premium will be received in various ways — quarterly, ihalf-yearly, annually, or in a single •sum ; aud the scale of rates, as pubilished iv the schedule, seems to be •moderate. Many other details are given, which we commend to the notice of the public, particularly to husbands and fathers whose incomes are likely to die with them. We do not know what peculiar advantages, if auy, are offered by the G-overnmeut, beyoud that the raouey paid for premiums is retained in the country ; but the announcement made in the Gazette will certainly call public atteufcioa to the subject, and rouse a spirit of inquiry. We attach great importatice to the principle of life insurance. If working men and others of limited incomes ' could only bo persuaded to spend in r._ premiums the sixpences and shillings they devote to tho purchase of spirits, how much misery and privation might be averted — how much additional huppiuess would accrue to the human family !
