Hakvest in Otago. — From Otago we leai'n that harvest would commence in the Oamaru district soon after the new year. The acreage under crop in Otago, 1868-9, as per G-overument return, was 152,568 acres, and the acreage for 1869-70 will be greater ; the official return, however, will not be made until February. Ample employment will thus be afforded to hundreds of hands for the next two or three months. The following are the crops of iB6S-69, exclusive of those of the aboriginal natives : —

Total Acres ... 152.5G8 687,015 The Road feosi Wanganui to Patea. — It is expected (says the Taranald Herald) that within a few weeks Cobb's coach will run from Patea to Wanganui. Everything is ready except some portions of the road, principally tho crossing of the Waitotara and Wihenuakura rivers,, at which the Veteran.. Volunteers, who had been placed on pay, are vow working. It is intended to start from Patea in the morning, reach Wanganui about 11, and then push on to Manawatu the same night, thus making the journey from Patea to Wellington in two clear days. Acclimatisation in. Auckland. — The Advertiser says that the Hero, during her last trip from Sydney, appears to have been converted into a modern Noah's Ark, judging from the quantity of birds and beasts which she has conveyed over. Amongst the former are some fine specimens of the Australian parrot, cockatoos, &c. There were also six splendid little ponies on board, three of which have been brought over for Mr. Clarkson. As they were landed and trotted up the town yesterday, they called forth many expressions of admiration from judges of horse flesh, who were loud in praise of their clean limbs and fine action. New Flax Machine. — We had yesterday the pleasure of witnessing a trial of a new flax-dressing machine, just completed by Mr. John Smith, of the Vulcan Foundry, Manners street. The machine is similar in principle to the Price machine, the leaves passing through close rollers, one grooved the other plain, and then coming under a large revolving beater. The castings for the now machine are of an exceedingly substantial character; the whole workmanship appears to be excellent, and, cousidoring the rather unfavorable circumstances under which yesterday's trial was made, the work performed ■was yery satisfactory. — Independent, January 16. Civil Seevice.— C. 0. N. Barron, Esq., has been appointed a member of the Local Board of Examiners at Wellington, under the Civil Service Act, 1866.
