FLOOD AT WHAKATANE.

(From the correspondent of the "N, Z. Herald.") January 3. I send you the particulars of a flood which has completely devastated the whole of this beautiful district, leaving the natives completely destitute. They have held meetings, and have come to the determination to leave the district. On the 31st December and the Ist January it rained very heavily, the wind .being from the north-east. Early on the morning of the 2nd the river began to rise, and before 2 p.m. all the cultivations were six feet under water. Hundreds of pigs were drowned ; cattle and horses shared the same fate. Potatoes, corn, tobacco, taro, kumera, and other native produce all destroyed. £5,000 will not cover their loss. The poor people seem broken-hearted, as they have only just recovered from Te Kooti's raid last year. Unless something is done by ( the Government the whole of this district will be taken possession of by the Uriwera. I believe the natives are sending a full account to the Government.
