WELLINGTON.
Monday, Dec. 20 Mr. Balfour, the marine engineer, was drowned at Timaru on Saturday ; also, Mr^-Smallwood, teller of the Union Bank. They were going off to the Maori (?), in a boat, which was swamped alongside. Of 14 persons on board, those two only were drowned.
Mr. Balfour was going to Oamaru to attend the funeral of his friend Mr. Patterson, railway engineer. . There is great gloom over this city consequent on Mr. Balfour's untimely end. He leaves a widow and one child. . .
A young child has died in Dunedin from the use of poisoned sugar. The Tfcrarua does not leave till Monday the 27th.
