Pound Sales wili take place this day (should the animals pounded not have been reclaimed) at Napier, Meanee, and Petane. Mb. E. Lyndon will sell, this day, atmospheric lamps, concertinas, &c. RouTiiEDGE, Kennedy & Co. will sell, to-morrow, at the Meanee sale yards, horses, drays, cattle, &c; Singular Occurrence. — During the late engagement atTauriri, (base of Tongariro) the enemy fired a bullet at the Colonial forces, which was afterwards picked up, and which, strange to say, proved to be wrapped in part of a despatch written in June last from the Hon. H. R. Russell, then General Government -gent, to Lieut. Colonel Herrick at Waikaremoana. A Provincial Government Gazettb, published on Saturday last, contains notices of the election of Mr, T. K. Newton for Napier, and of Mr. J. D. Ormond for Porangahau; a re-publicition from the New Zealand Gazette of quarantine regulations ; and proclamations of land sales (as per the advertising columns ot this day's Herald.) Fire. — On Saturday night, about 10 o'clock, the large building on Barrack hill, built and formerly occupied by the late Mr. James Stewart, was discovered to be inflames. The quantity of timber in it was very l^rge, and it burned up fiercely, shedding a brilliant light for miles around, and (the wind being high at the time) propelling showers of burning flakes to a great distance. Some houses, indeed, • — Major Green's, for example — were iv some danger from this cause ; and the flakes also fell in quantity upon the houses of Mr. Tylee and Mr. Fannin. The. full strength of the -conflagration was, however, soon over, but the embers smouldered throughout the night. The house was unoccupied and uninsured, and no cause for the occurrence can be assigned.
