The Hon. the Native Minister.— The Hon. Mr. M'Lean arrived in the Lord Ashley on Sunday last, on an official visit to the province. Since that gentleman has been in office, there has been a decided change in native affairs for the better, which shows that Mr. M'Lean's name has an influence in itself over the native mind. On Monday last, a number of the most influential chiefs met the Native Minister at the Native Offioe, and his reception was most enthusiastic. The natives addressed him in words of welcome, and one of the most noticeable features was that they asked for nothing. The Hon. Mr. M'Lean, we understand, is on a tour through all the native districts in the Northern Island, and the amount of good that will result from it cannot be over estimated. Whether in office or out of it, it is well known that the governing powers for the time being could ill spare one who, like Mr. M'Lean, has spent a life-time in the service of the colony.
