WELLINGTON. ',' ?-.**' ''" ' •'-, ... Monday, October 11. The English letters for Hawke's Bay were despatched overland on Friday last. The newspapers will be despatched per Edith, on Wednesday. The Government objected to pay a bonus for a special steamer, consequent on the vote of the Assembly refusing further subsidies. Hamiora was to-day sentenced to be hung, beheaded, and quartered. The ; Judge held out no hopes of commutation of sentence. All the hulk prisoners have been similarly sentenced. Turoa, the head chief of them, pleaded for two and a half hours. The Judge told them that, after imprisonment for some time, they would probably be liberated if they behaved well. The Taranaki's cargo is selling better than, from its condition, was at first anticipated. Otago and London have had a great artillery match; the former beat by 101 points. i The Appeal Court sits formally tomorrow.
