Napiee Land & Building Society No. 1 . — The annual meeting of this society was held last evening, when highly satisfactory reports were presented. At the conclusion, it was resolved that No. 2 society be immediately started, and a committee appointed to frame rules for the same. The Uniform Telegraphic Scale operates most unjustly where short distances are concerned, say, for instance, between Napier and Waipawa or Waipukurau, in which the fee has by one fell swoop been more than doubled. The uniform rate should either, we submit, be reduced to one shilling, or there should be two classes of rates — for under 100 miles, Is. ; ; over that, as at present, 2s. 6d. A Thoroughbred Horse, as our readers will perceive, has just been added to the stud of Mr. Purvis Russell. It arrived from Wairarapa on the 6th inst., in fair condition, and will, to some extent, fill up the blank caused by the loss of Gownsman last year. Acknowledgment.— We have to thank Mr. Moss, purser of the s.s. Wellington, (from whom we have always experienced i courtesy) for a copy of the European Mail for August, as well as late southern j papers received per Airedale in the Manukau. From the European Mail— -which j is a highly interesting number, especially to New Zealand colonists — we have quoted to i some extent in this issue, and, in our next, shall use its contents with equal freedom. ! English Mail. — In reply to numerous inquiries from the country, we regret that we cannot learn of any opportunity by which the English mail is likely to reach this province earlier than the return of the Wellington, which will not be far short of | ten days hence, as she had to go on to Dunedin. The mail, by the time we get it, will have lain in Wellington as near as possible three weeks ! [Since the above was in type, we learn that letters were sent overland on Friday last, and that the newspapers will be sent by the surveying schooner Edith, which leaves Wellington to-morrow.]
