Hawke's Bay Herald TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1869. THE TAUPO NEWS.

We think we may safely congratulate our readers upon the intelligence lately received from Taupo. The arch-villain Te Kooti and his band — let loose in our midst by the criminal neglect of the late Ministry — have been followed to their own fastnesses, attacked on their own ground, and, after being severely punished, scattered in ail directions.* The affair took place almost at the base of Tongariro, in about as rugged a country as could well be conceived. It lasted a very short time, but everything was done well — every one behaved well, and the result was a complete success. M'Donnell, who is undoubtedly the right man in the right place, is now in the bush, after what remain^ of the rebel band, and we hope he may be successful in overtaking, them. Meanwhile we have the very great satisfaction of thinking that confidence is rapidly being restored, and that obstacles to the opening of the Kaimauawa gold-field, arising from Te Kooti's presence, are no longer of a formidable character.
