THE ENGLISH MAIL.

The English Mail arrived in Wellington on Tuesday at 7. 45 p.m., some two or tbree hours after the telegrams had reached that city from Hokitika. Where they were in the meantime does not appear, but, most likely, they were boxing about in a steam tug outside Hokitika bar. The delay uniformly caused by the state of the weather at that port, calls, we think, for some alteration in the arrangements for the mail service. The telegrams for June have no special interest. We learn that wool had slightly rallied at the close of the sales. This, by the way, we knew before. The same remark applies to the appointment of the Rev. Mr. Cowie, ancl to other items. We are pleased to observe that another shipment of Australian preserved meats at once found a market upon arrival. Politically, the sky was unruffled ; so far at least as foreign powers are concerned. The United States had ceased to press the Alabama claims, preferring to wait a little till the wrath ofthe British lion had cooled down. Mr. Motley had arrived, with instructions to that effect. Ireland, however, was again causing uneasiness to the British Government. The Disestablishment Bill had passed the ordeal of a second reading in the House of Lords, and would, doubtless, become law. The newspaper writers were still talking " rot" about New Zealand self-re-liance. They will change their tune by and bye. The Lord Ashley, with the Hawke's Bay portion of the mail on board, was to have left Wellington for Napier at 4 p.m. yesterday, but does not appear to have done so. She will doubtless make a start to-day, and arrive here to-morrow.
