The Hawke's Bay Herald. FRIDAY, JUNE,4 1869.

Our readers generally will expect, this morning, news of a more sensational character than we are able to give them. It has been understood that an attempt would be made to oust the Ministry upon the address ; but, as will be seen from our telegraphic despatch, no attempt ,of the kiud was made. This has been, somewhat prematurely, construed by the small knot of ministerial supporters here into a victory j the simple fact beiug that tweuty southern members are yet abserjt, and that no political movement of any importance could be made in their absence. When all are present, doubtless a trial of strength will take place, with what result it will not be difficult to foretell. We doubt much, indeed, judging from private advices, whether the ministerial supporters would be found, on a division, to exceed tweuty in number. The address itself is a document with which, under auy circumstances, it would be difficult to quarrel. It is simply a bald iteration of truisms, without an iota of what could be called a policy. Little is expected at any time from au opening speech, but the one before us is more than usually vapid and inexpressive. We caunot say that it; expresses nothing, for it presents a mournful but true picture of the state to which the colony is reduced, and conveys the still more disheartening intelligence that the Mother Couutry will absolutely do nothiug for it in its hour of difficulty ; but the speech is utterly destitute of any definite plan or proposal for the future— anything that the critically disposed could take up aud pull to pieces. To-day, nothing will be done, unless in the way of notices for Tuesday's sittiug ; so that it will be next week before auy event of importance is likely to occur— that is to say any legislative eveut ; for it would not surprise us to hear, at auy moment, that the Hauhaus supposed to be massed at Waikaremoaua had made their dread appearance in ! some other, and wholly unprotected, part of the country.
