AUCKLAND.
Oub files by the Star of the South are to the evening of Tuesday last. The excitement with regard to an intended rising in Waikato had nearly subsided, but news of the murder of a Mr. Pitcairn had been received from Bay of Plenty. Respecting this murder, although believed to be a fact, it really rests upon a slender foundation. A well-informed correspondent thus writes us : — Dr. Pollen received despatches respecting the murder of Mr. Pitcairn from Colonel Harrington, who had received a letter from Dr. Nesbitt, to the effect that a native rumour had reached him that Mr. Pitcairn had been murdered by Te Kooti, who had also captured 50 friendly natives, and had threatened a general attack. Dr. Nesbitt says that the report wants confirmation ; as, no doubt, does the rumour of five Europeans having been killed in Waikato. Mr. C. 0. Davis had gone right through to Taupo to attend the Native Lands Court there. It was reported that 30 or 40 men had been working on the sly in the Ohinemuri country, and had obtained magnificent prospects, such as were likely to cause a rush.
