WRECK OF THE IDA ZEIGLER.
An official enquiry into the circumstances attending the loss of this ship was held in the Council Chamber on Thursday and yesterday, before H. S. Tiffen and J. A. Smith, Justices of the Peace, J. M. Tabuteau Esq. principal officer of customs, and Capt. Johnson as Nautical Assessor. The witnesses examined were Capt. Sellars, the Ist, 2nd, and 3rd mate, the ship's carpenter, the Harbour Master, the Assistant Pilot, and Capt. Duncan of the barque William Cargill, The evidence is too voluminous for publication in this issue. The decision of the court was that the ship Ida Zeigler was lost in tbe roadstead of Napier, on the 27th Feb., 1869, owing to an error in judgment of the Harbour Master in mooring the ship in too shallow water at the Government moorings ; also in not shackling both ship's cables to the moorings ; and his neglect in not exainih- ' ing the buoy and moorings and taking soundings previous to the wool season. We also ROB&iiUs» tiki chip's cables were too short, and wq are not satisfied with the state of the starboard cable.
