The Guaud Duty, which has been kept up so regularly for — we should suppose — a period of three months, is likely, we learn, to be discontinued, it not being considered that sufficient cause for alarm now exists. The Militia and Volunteers were again engaged on Wednesday in rifle practice with blank cartridge. The Napier 1 Brass Band was in attendance and played a number of lively airs. The Telegraph Office at the Spit will probably be opened on Monday next, as the gentleman appointed to that station may be expected to arrive to-morrow in the Phoebe. „ English Mail. — It will be seen from our Wellington telegram that a mail for Panama has not been forwarded this month • — no steamer having arrived from Sydney. The Overland Mail from Wellington is due to-day at 3 o'clock, and returns on Monday at 7. This arrangement, as destroying all chance of a Saturday half-holi-day, and tending to force persons having large correspondence, into Sunday work, is highly objectionable, and we trust that some alteration in the times of arrival and departure will speedily be effected.
