WELLINGTON.
BY ELECTRIQ TELEGRAPH. Stack's credentials for recruiting in Victoria being only a telegram sent by Government to him at Hokitika, the Victorian Government at first refused him permission to recruit. The service 5 besides, was in very bad odour, and little progress had been made up to last advices. Several parties of recruits have arrived from the southern provinces. Last night, one of the newly enlisted attempted to cut his throat. On Thursday Mr. J. E. Fitzgerald published a letter, occupying four printed columns, deprecating any application for Imperial troops, but suggesting that England might render help in the shape of money and arms. Colonel Lyon has assumed the command at Wanganui. At the latest date nothing was known of Titokowaru's movements. There has been no news all week. The arrival of Cobb's coach is anxiously looked for. To-day, the nomination took place for a member to represent Nelson in the General Assembly. There were two candidates, Mr. Shepherd and Mr. Edwards. The former had the show of hands, and the latter demanded a poll, to take place 24th.
