PORANGAHAU.
On Tuesday last, the 15th insfc., a meeting of settlers residing in the southern parts of the province was held at White's hotel, Porangahau, to take into consideration the position of the district in the event of a sudden inroad. The proceedings (of which we shall publish a report on Tuesday) were very interesting. The following resolutions were unanimously adopted :— That in the opinion of this meeting the present aspect of native affairs is such as to call attention to the unprotected state of the settlers in this part of the Province, which is to a great extent isolated, and would be cut off from the other settled districts in the event of a sudden inroad. That this meeting is of opinion that measures should be taken for the erection of such defensible buildings as may be necessary for the security of the large number of women and children now resident at the chief centres of population, and that the aid the Government will give towards such places of defence should be ascertained. That in the opinion of this meeting the Militia requires to be placed in a more efficient state ; that ammunition should be provided for rifle practice, which is essential if the force is to be relied upon for actual service ; and that a supply of ammunition for the defence of the district itself should be kept in secure hands in case of an emergency arising. That this meeting, in adopting the foregoing resolutions, desires to express on the part of the settlers of the Porangahau district their willingness to bear their part in providing for its defence. That the Chairman be requested to communicate these resolutions to the Government, and obtain as early a reply as possible thereto.
