Cricket. — A meeting of the Club is convened for this evening at 8 o'clock. Earthquake. — A slight shock of earthquake was experienced at Waipawa on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Passengers ex Gertrude, some twenty in number, arrived in Napier on Tuesday by the s.s. Ahuriri from Wellington. The Rev. G. Morice arrived from Wellington by the Steamer Ahuriri, and will conduct service at the usual hours to-mor-row, in St. Paul's church. Volunteer Artillery. — In our notice of the meeting at which resolutions were passed for forming a volunteer artillery corps, we omitted to mention that Mr. W. Routledge had been elected as second lieutenant. Tenders are invited from persons desirous of renting the slaughter house and yards, also the Toll-gate, for the year ending 30th June, 1869 — for the Toll-gate on Saturday next ; the slaughter-house on Monday, 29th inst. Grammar School. — The half-yearly examination of the scholars attending Mr. Marshall's school was held yesterday. His Excellency and Mr. M'Lean were present, and the former made a short address to the pupils. A list of prizes and further parti- [ culars will appear on Tuesday. The Napier Brass Band promises very , soon to be an accomplished fact. The number of performing members is now 19, and the money subscribed towards the purchase of instruments, up to last night, £75 out of ;£loo required. The public having so cheerfully responded to the call for aid, the order for instruments will be sent by the first opportunity. Child nearly Drowned. — On Thursday afternoon last, a girl, 7 years of age, daughter of Capt. Schon, while playing on the beach, Eastern Spit, with two other children, was caught by a wave and drawn into the boiling surf. The alarm was given, and a passer-by (whose name we have not heard) promptly rushed in, neck deep, and brought the drowning child ashore.
