THE PANAMA MAIL.
The Storm.Bird, s.s., arrived on Saturday • afternoon with the Hawke's Buy portion of the Panama Mail, which reached Wellington on Thursday last at 4 p.m. The Evening Post of Thursday thus announces the arrival of the Ruahine : — The s.s. Ruahine, Captain Beal, arrived in the bay at 4 this afternoon. The vessel, which lett Wellington on the morning of the 9th July, had favorable winds and weather for the greater part of the passage, and arrived in Panama on tbe sth August. Mr, Taylor, a first-class passenger, died of consumption on the 20th July. The Ruahine received the English mails on board on the 24th August, and steamed to sea at 11 p.m. She had fine weather and light S.E. trades, which continued to the end of the passage, and had it not been for the inferior quality of coal put on board at Panama, would, no doubt, have arrived at her appointed time. She called at the Island bf Opara on the downward route. The barque Midas had arrived at the Island, and all the arrangements for coaling the steamers with as little delay as possible are complete, so that for the future the objection to arriving on the New Zealand coast with too fight a ship will be obviated. The French Government sent a steamer from Tahiti to Opara in May last to take possession, and hoist the Tahitian flag, so that the island is now under the French protection. The Ruahine has a large mail (W. Grfcy, Esq, Mail Agent), a quantity of cargo* and the following passengers : — For Wellington— Mr. Beaufort. For Nelson — Captain Barnet. Mr. Maxwell, Mrs. Smith,, For Melbourne — Madam Marzetti; Miss Marzetti, Miss Lehman, Mr and Mrs Schmidt, Mr and Mrs Lehman, Mr and Mrs Schultz, Mr. and Mrs Martinnetti, Madam Mathieu and son, Mr and Mrs Binsley and child, Mr. and Mrs Burrill, Mr and Mrs Masseatac, Messrs Hoyte, Clapp, Haslem, Duesberry, Lehman, P. Martinetti and son, Scott, Johnsen, Powell. For Sydney — Mrs Dibbs, 6 children, and 2 servants, Mr. Darbeshire. We take the following summary of news from the Star and Herald: —
