WEST COAST GOLD FIELDS.
GOLD STRUCK AT THE KAKAMEA. [Prom the Nelson ' Examiner,! Mar. 14] The steamer Ifelson brought yesterday the pleasing intelligence thaT gold had been struck about twenty-five miles up the Karamea, and that -the yield was turning out well. The discovery was made by a party of Maoris, who quickly obtained thirty-three ounces'; in addition to this, another lot of twenty-six ounces had been brought into Westport and sold to the Union Bank of Australia. The person who purchased this_ of the diggers might have got four times the quantity had he possessed funds for the purpose. Two quartz reefs had been discovered at Waimangaroa, a short distance north of the Buller, which are believed to promise well. In addition to these discoveries, which must have the effect of drawing population northward, and may lead to important results for this province, new workings, that pay well, are being opened at the Pakihi. A good deal of gold is also said to have come down the Buller river to Westport. The same journal in its summary for England says : — The extension of gold discoveries northwards in this province progresses steadily, and tends more and more to confirm the opinion of those good judges who have pronounced the western part of this province to be at once the largest and one of the richest gold-fields in this part of the world. Every discovery of this sort adds greater weight to the arguments of those who maintain not only the necessity of a railroad from Nelson to the West Coast, but also its practicability as a successful speculation for the contractors who may undertake the work on the terms offered by the province.
