Hawke's Bay Herald TUESDAY, JANUARY 29, 1867. THE APPROACHING ELECTION.
Although writs for the election of members to form the next Provincial Council will be shortly issued, we do not find that the subject has received any special attention. In the Napier Country, indeed, there has been some little political action, the names of three or four gentlemen having been mentioned in connection with the representation of that district ; but neither in Napier nor any other of the inland districts, has anything yet been done, so far as wo have heard, in the way of preparation for the approaching elections. Our readers are doubtless aware that, under the Representation Act of last session, which has lately been assented to by the Governor, the next Council will consist of eighteen members j that, for the purpose of the election of said members, the province shall be divided into fresh electoral districts ; and that the names of such districts, and the number of members to be returned by each respectively, aVioll Vio n.s fnllnwa •—
Napier Town 5 Members Napier Country 1 " Petane 1 " Wairoa 1 " Mohaka 1 " Clive 1 " Havelock 1 " TeAute 2 " Waimarama 1 " Porongahau 1 " Hampden 1 " Waipukurau 1 " — It will be seen from this that considerable changes have taken place in the representation of the province. Four new districts, each returning one member, have been created, viz., Wairoa, Petane, Havelock, and Hampden. The last named is provided with its representative by taking one from Waipukurau, of which it is an offshoot ; while provision is made for a new member on behalf of each of the other three. As, with the exception of Napier Town, the electoral rolls have been lately altered to suit the requirements of the Act, we purpose publishing the same for the benefit of our readers, as they stand after emendation. We begin, in this issue, with those of Mohaka, Petane, Wairoa, Waimararaa, and and Waipukurau.
