WAIROA.

(from our own correspondent) Clyde, January 25, 1867. I see, in your last week's issue, some notice is made of a report of the survey having been stopped at this place. I need scarcely tell you that the whole affair is a mistake. Some "big talk" on a small scale was, I believe, attempted by Tamihana Huata (Native Minister) but our Resident Magistrate, hearing of it, at once proceeded to the place and put things on a proper footing. The survey is now going on as expeditiously as possible. Some few nights ago, a daring attempt was made, by some person or persons unknown, to set fire to a large quantity of posts and rails belonging to Mr. Stopford. There must have been at least three or four persons concerned in the affair. The fire was fortunately perceived by Mr. Peakman, who promptly obtained assistance and succeeded in extinguishing the flames before much damage was done. The miscreants were not satisfied by merely trying to fire the property, but, finding it scattered in several lots near the bank of the river, they actually took the trouble to throw some hundreds of the rails into the water. Fortunately, they were recovered before they got far down the stream. I trust the offenders will soon be brought to justice, and I think they will, for the police, it is reported, have already obtained a clue. We have had three or four days most refreshing rain, which was much needed, for our district was beginning to look a deal too much like Napier to be pleasant or profitable.
