WELLINGTON.
Independent Office, January 16. During the month that has elapsed since the departure of the last Suez mail, tho demand for all descriptions of goods have been extremely languid, and forced sales by auotion have resulted in enormously low prices. Successive importations from England and the colonies have completely overstocked ouj market, and render it a most difficult matter to quote values with any degree of acouracy. Trade has nevertheless begun to exhibit symptoms of improvement within the last few days, and with the prospect of a good harvest and an increasing demand for cattle and country 1 produce for the West Coast, we may fairly hope to see our stooks move off at payable rates in spite of tho present depression. Provisions.-— Bacon and hams 'of good quality are worth 9d to lld. Butter continues to rule low, and the demand has fallen off considerably. Good salt butter is worth lld to 12d with little enquiry, and large stocks coming forward. We, however, look for an inorease on these rates as the season advances. Oats and Maize.— Market fully supplied and unsaleable, maize brought 3s Gd per bushel by auction at Mr. E. Pearoe's sale ; and oats have changed hands at 5s 9d. Cattle.— Fat and Store Cattle are in steady demand for shipment, and realise high values. Pat beasts fit for slaughter are worth 3£d to 4d per lb. Good store cattle, £Q to £8 per head. Cowb, £12 to £15 each. Fat Sheep.— Are in plentiful supply at 3£d to 3£d per lb. Store wethers, overstocked. Store ewes, 18s to 225. Horses— Unsaleable. Flo ua— 6o tons of flour ex Monro, from Valparaiso were tried at Messrs. Owen, Smart and Co.'s auotion sale to-day, and 20 tons sold at £12 10s per ton, the remainder being bought in at £13, We understand that the remainder of her cargo has been purchased privately, and our stock will consequently be 1 heavy and prices rule low for some months to 1 come.
