DUNEDIN LIVE STOCK MARKET.

April 18, 1864:. Driver, Maclean and Co,'s Report, 18th April, 1864 :— Transactions in stock during the past month have beeu rather limited, being to a great extent confined to small lots for town consumption. The extreme dullness caused by the appearance of pleuro-pneumonia among a few herds of cattle, „ • in the early part of the year, is fast wearing off, and we are now able to report the market in a more healthy state, and an inclination on the part of capitalists to invest, as will be seen by reference to our report of Station properties.. ' , The importation of cattle being entirely stopped we must depend upou our own resources for a time, and that we shall require all and more than the Province can produce there is little doubt. Feeling assured that remunerative prices can be obtained for all the fat stock the Province can produce, we would again urge, upon holders the impropriety of forcing Stock of inferior quality -upon the market, a course that is unprofitable to both buyer and seller. The following shipments have arrived during the past month :— > Sheep Cattle Pigs Island City, from "Western Port... $50 180 — City of Hobart. ditto Melbourne... 500 • — — Zephyr, ditto Waniranui — * — 250 Rangatira, ditto Wellington ... 800 18 — Gazelle, ditto Wellington — 135 — City of Hobart, ditto Melbourne... 150 — — City of Newcastle do. Newcastle... 130 — •— Fat Stock — The market has been fairly siiprplied jvith cattle of ordinary quality, and prices obtained show -a gradual improvement, ;"arid : we; : ' *'* anticipate that cattle of good quality will be in activedeinarid' throughout^ the winter. Sales of: : "^ ■'''' various lotsat our yards; "> realised^from 1 £16? to*; r-^ £23 10s.. We quote prime quality beef at about 60s. per lOOlbs. ■=-: •;;■: .■•: '. ; . ; r- , Fat GAiiVEsarein good demand at from &i ; .; to £6 10s, according to size, and quality^ oursales^ '; averaging £5 each, . "•■■■'■■ ■-.

Fat Sheep— The market is quite bare of good quality mutton, and higher prices have lately., been obtained for small lots. We have sold several lots at from 35s to. 40a 6d, or equal to 8d to B^d per lb. We cannot expect these prices to last, as we know of several lots near town. We however, think that good quality mutton will maintain fair value for some time to come. Sales have beea made, deliverable on station, at 6d to 6£dperlb. - Store Stock. — cattle are more inquired after, and we anticipate a good demand ere long. Holders will not submit to any material reduction from prices obtained before the appearance of pleuro pneumonia, as it is evident that we shall require all the Province can produce, and the fear of disease has been much lessened by the effects of inoculation. Sheep. — The late importations are now nearly worked off, with but few expected to arrive, and holders of provincial stock are not disposed to sell at prices satisfactory ' to buyers. We quote: — Imported ewe.«, 2 to 8-tooth, at 25s to 26s ; wethers 4 to 8 tooth, 21s to 235: (provincial) ewes, 2 to 6-tooth, 30s to 32s 6d ; wethers, 4to 8 tooth, 26s t0275.6d, - Statiok Pboperties.— We have numerous enquiries for first-class properties, and have sold the Matakanui Station, on the Manuherikia, comprising 80,000 acres, with 15.914 mixed sheep 403 head of cattle, 19 horses, 29 working bullocks, &c, for the sum of £39,250, to Messrs: Glassford Brothers, of Sydney. N.S.W. Messrs. Miles and Co. of Christchurch, report to us the sale of Mount Possession station, situated on the Ashburton, comprising 53000 acres, with 13,000 mixed sheep, 523 head of cattle &c, at about £30,200.
